Up Until Sunday

Unfortunately, the weather here hasn't been the best these past couple of days. By that, I mean it has been about 70 and somewhat cloudy. (sorry for those who are experiencing snow right now!) I've seen Dan more which has been fun and still weird that he lives right down the street. All students have just been hanging out around campus and getting acquainted with one another over these past couple of days.

BUT today, my flatmates and I experienced the funniest moment since our arrival to new zealand (and we had a perfect view of the entire situation). The RAs were hosting a carnival on Ilam fields so we decided to all walk over together and check it out. It wasn't as much fun as they made it sound but Liz and I still participated in the bounce house obstacle course and then we all walked around for a while and listened to the band they had playing. After a while, we got bored and decided to sit in the green, quad-like area outside of our flat and meet people since so many people pass that regularly. We all grabbed towels from the room and brought magazines outside to read together. Being five girls, we flipped through Cosmo and were dying laughing at pretty much everything when, out of nowhere, five guys run over carrying gym equipment (bench, weights, etc.) while wearing costumes such as the Joker and Spiderman. They instantly start "working out" and ask us what we are doing at the gym on this beautiful day. We all start laughing and obviously ask the inevitable, "what are you talking about?" They say "we don't know why the uni decided to put the gym here; they just did! we should make the most of it!" Obviously, knowing this was all a joke, we just kept laughing. They decided they were tired and should take a break from working out and read our magazine with us. When we tried to ask for names, they responded with superhero names. We all joked around for fifteen minutes about how it is completely normal for five 20+ year old guys to dress in costumes on Sunday afternoons. The guys then proceeded to invite us over to their flat but we all politely declined. They left their phone number and address and started carrying their gym equipment home. On the way, they ran into more people and put on the same routine. The Joker and Spiderman then decided to climb one of the trees located in the quad area. All of a sudden, Spiderman jumped off the tree and the Joker broke the branch and held onto it as he fell to the ground! A security guard saw these guys and started running over to them. By this time, the crew had loaded their gym materials into a shopping cart and all started running away while carrying the branch and pushing the shopping cart! Unfortunately for them, the shopping cart toppled over as they rounded the corner and pieces of their gym equipment were scattered on the floor. Four of the guys continued to run while Spiderman stayed back to gain the equipment. Obviously, the security guard caught up to Spiderman and stopped him from running away. We aren't exactly sure what happened from there - they talked for a while and then we saw Spiderman walk away with all of his equipment - but we think they are receiving a fine of some sort for breaking the tree because we saw him lifting the tree and heard him saying he would plant another one. Everyone in the quad was speechless at this point but only we had heard and seen this entire situation from the start. It was one of the funniest things I have ever seen in my life and I wish i had been carrying my video camera at the time! Who knew sitting in the quad could be so entertaining?

Tonight, the girls and I decided to do a dinner together and get to know eachother more. It really was a lot of fun and now we are all just getting ready for the start of classes tomorrow morning. We are about to start watching Yes Man before falling asleep. Classes tomorrow should be interesting!

Wednesday, Thursday

So Wednesday was enrolment day for my classes! I am actually really excited for school to start. It has been fun just hanging out but my classes just seem so interesting along with the fact that I will be going to school in New Zealand (I still don't believe it!). Kevin and I both had to enrol at noon so we met outside of our flats and headed over to the Science Lecture Block. Luckily, I was able to enrol in the three classes I wanted: Industrial Organization Economics, Game Theory Economics, and Social Psychology. I also don't have any classes on Wednesdays! Enrolment was pretty easy and only took about an hour so we headed over to the UCSA building to get our uni cards. There were many companies such as banks trying to get us to open an account but they were giving out lots of free things! This one bank had a wheel and it said "you could win $10,000" above it so Kevin and I agreed that if either of us won, we would split it. (haha) He ended up winning a pen (lame) but I won two movie tickets!! That's pretty exciting considering movie tickets here are between $15-$17. I gloated while we waited on line and we spent another hour just looking at the various stands.

Later, around 4, Dan Foote was knocking on my door asking if I wanted to meet his friends that were hanging outside of my flat on the green. Of course I said yes so we went and hung out in the sun for a while before some of my friends texted me saying they were going to the field to play frisbee. I left Dan and we played different frisbee games (all unfair to me due to the fact that I am vertically challenged) and then sat in the grass talking until it got dark. Since Wednesday was my flatmate Sophie's 18th birthday, the flat went out to dinner to celebrate. After coming back, I just got into my pajamas and relaxed for the night!

Sometime on Wednesday while Kevin and I had been searching, I found a flier that a student was selling one of the books I needed for my game theory class so I texted him and we decided to meet in the city at 11 on Thursday morning. Don't worry, I didn't go meet him alone! Kevin came with me and we spent the day in the city following the river around the different parks and such. There was also a market happening in Cathedral Square so we walked around there for a bit before settling at an outdoor cafe for lunch. After lunch, we decided to take a walk through the Botanical Gardens located at the end of the city. They were absolutely beautiful. Unfortunately, I didn't take my camera because I thought we were just grabbing the book so I will HAVE to go back (such a sacrifice huh?). We walked through the rose gardens, saw all the ducks in the water, and read about all of the statues and the "artwork." The flowers truly were the best part until Kevin started having sneezing fits - although that was pretty funny as well. We walked back to the bus exchange a little while later and safely made it back to the uni.

Once inside my flat, Sophie and I were watching tv and I took a short nap. There was an orientation week toga party last night so Sophie, Aleesha, Liz and I headed to K-mart to buy sheets and ribbon for our togas (kiwis don't have dress up parties ever so the Americans had to show them how it's done!). We got back to our flat, made our togas, then invited a bunch of people over to walk to the toga party together. Later, I met up with Mike and some people in the other group and we all headed into town for about an hour. By the end of the night, I was already so tired so we all came back to uni and fell asleep.

Monday, Tuesday

Both days were pretty relaxing. Monday we had orientation from 9:00-3:00. It was pretty boring but I guess we met some new people along the way. I then met my "regular" group to go to the beach. Mike, Kevin, Shir, Inga and I played frisbee on the beach for a while which was really funny but definitely tiring. It was too chilly out to go in the water so Allie, Sophie, Jack and I sat around talking before taking the bus back home. That night, Aleesha, Sophie and I went to the new common room for a BBQ and movie night to meet some new people but almost everyone left after the BBQ so we split too. We met Mike, Kevin (who is from Brockport), and Shir outside and ended up talking to them and joking around for a bit. After, we tried to go check out the on campus bar but since Sophie was only 17 she couldn't get in so we came back to our flat instead. That was totally fine by me because I was finally exhausted. I've been waiting for the time difference thing to catch up to me and I'm pretty sure that was the night.

Tuesday, we had to wake up at 9 again for orientation but it was only until 12:30. During orientation, we were meeting the people sitting around us and Liz and I met the guys that live in the flat next to us. We all get along great and talked about doing dinners together and such this year so I think it will be fun. After that, because business schools always think they are better than everyone else, I had to go to a business and economics school orientation. Luckily that only lasted an hour and I was able to stick with one of the guys we had met earlier that lives in the flat next to us. We both walked back to our flats and then Liz, Sophie and I headed for the beach again. There we met Lauren, a girl I had met on my first flight from New City, Mel, Allie, and their orientation group. About fifteen of us laid there joking around and talking for quite a while before they decided to take the bus home while Liz, Sophie, Lauren, and I went to coffee culture again. We sat in there talking about our high school and college experiences before taking the metro back. When we all got home, Aleesha told us that the boys next door had invited us over so we headed over there for the night to hang out and celebrate Sophie's 18th birthday at midnight! We then tried to get into the bar but they don't let people in after midnight and the bouncer was being rude even though it was her birthday. Instead, we met up with some of the guys there and just hung out until we all decided to go to sleep a while later.

Lazy Day

Sorry to report that nothing too interesting happened today. Some of the people we met in Shelley's group last night came over along with Mike and we all headed into the city. We walked around for a bit and helped them get their metro cards. After that, we went to a cute little outdoor market that takes place in the city every Saturday and Sunday afternoon. They had many stands including soaps, scarves, clothes, jewelery, food, wooden carvings and candles. A live band was also playing while we walked around. We took the metro back to Canterbury after a while and walked around the mall before heading back to our flats. Everyone has an early morning tomorrow (I personally have to be up for orientation at 8:00-yuck) so we are going to hang out in the flat and call it a night.

Sumner Beach

Saturday needed to be a beach trip. We spent the day lounging around on Sumner Beach! Although it wasn't sunny the entire time, it was still fun! Mike and I could not get over the fact that we were swimming in the middle of February. The water was a little chilly at first but after that it felt amazing. We laid out, checked out the coast to coast competition occurring on the beach, and then decided to climb through the caves located on the beach. Climbing in and around the caves was pretty cool for a while and then we decided to go splashing through the water. The waves weren't absolutely huge but they were still tons of fun and exhausting!

About a hour later, we took a short walk around the very, very small town of Sumner and ended up eating at a cafe named Coffee Culture. It was a very quaint place and reminded me so much of Muddy Waters in Geneseo (for those of you who don't know, it is an adorable cafe located on Main Street that I frequent almost every day)! I tried the Chai Tea there but it definitely was not the same. Anyway, after that, we caught the bus back to the uni and Aleesha and I were greeted by our other flatmates! Shelley is from Oregon, Liz is from Maryland, and Sophie is from the UK. We are all very similar in music tastes, clothes, tv shows, and our ideas of exploring New Zealand so I am a lot more comfortable and ready for the semester to begin! Shelley is part of a Geology program and has been here for five weeks already doing work with a group of about 12 students from around the US. Mike came over to our flat along with about eight of Shelley's friends and we all hung out for about three hours before hitting the town. It felt great getting to know other people at the uni that are just as confused and awestruck as I am! I have a feeling we will all be good friends by the end of this trip.
